Café/bar Josef

Café Josef is a cozy bar in Prague’s Old Town, named after the owner’s great-grandfather, Josef Staus. Although open for over half a year, the café still lacks a defined visual identity—this is my proposal. The concept draws on the rich visual language of traditional metal ornaments found throughout the Old Town. Historically used to mark trades and storefronts, these decorative elements often reflect the nature of the business. I researched and hand-drew several motifs specifically related to cafés, then reimagined them as stylized tile patterns.

Patterns exist in sets of four, with each set representing a season. They can be expanded into a wider system of motifs in various shades, allowing for versatility across applications. The core palette includes olive green, black, and white for typography and layout, with seasonal colors adding depth and rhythm to the identity. The result is a system that connects the café’s atmosphere to the city’s heritage in a fresh and meaningful way.
